Hill Engineering will be presenting at the 2024 Turbine Engine Technology Symposium in Dayton, OH, from September 9th through September 12th. We invite you to come see us. The TETS symposium gathers approximately 1,000 engineers, scientists, managers, and operation personnel from throughout the turbine engine community every two years to review and discuss the latest turbine engine technology advances. Hill Engineering’s presentation will include a summary of recent work related to residual stress measurement on bearings using the TrueSlot® method. The abstract text is presented below.
Bearings are a critical part of a modern aircraft engine, but bearing failures can be catastrophic. Residual stress is a key characteristic for bearing performance. Current bearing technology makes extensive use of carburized steels such as M50NiL or Pyrowear™ 675. Residual stress measurements are a contractual requirement for delivery of a bearing, which puts a significant burden on bearing suppliers and can add weeks on product delivery to engine manufacturer or repair facility. With the intent of developing a flexible, automated, high-throughput, and high-resolution tool for meeting the residual stress testing requirements imposed on bearing suppliers, Hill Engineering developed the DART™ system to apply the TrueSlot® method of residual stress measurement to production bearings.
The DART™ is an industry-leading tool for precise, reliable, and efficient near-surface residual stress measurements. TrueSlot® is a residual stress measurement technique for generating a profile of residual stress versus depth from the material surface. Through prototype development and testing, Hill Engineering validated the method on a flat disk specimen of M50NiL. As part of this program, Hill Engineering also performed a demonstration at a bearing manufacturing facility to illustrate the capabilities of the DART™ technology and gain more insight into bearing supplier needs for residual stress quality assurance. The DART™ demonstrated measurement capabilities on M50NiL inner and outer roller bearing raceways of varying lengths and radii. The DART™ residual stress results correlated well with existing technology.
